Will West talks about counting the rings of the Douglas fir that was cut down on property off of Old Belfair Highway in Belfair, Wash. on Wednesday, Feb. 2, 2022. West, a timber faller by trade who has been admiring the tree since he moved to the area in 1994, stopped while passing by to see what remained of the giant fir. In the time since it was cut down on Tuesday, a steady stream of local residents have come to visit, akin to a paying of respects for a grand tree regarded as a community landmark — a rare old-growth fir within the Puget Trough that arborists thought was between 500-1000 years old.
