• Justin Brandner, 18, is all smiles after making a basket in the driveway at the family's Bremerton Wash. home on April 27, 2016.

When you meet Justin it’s the smile that hits you first. Pure joy, like he won the lottery of life. It’s infectious. You can’t help smiling, too. Justin takes your hand with a surprisingly firm grasp — at least on his strong side. He pumps your arm with his whole body. He waves his arms and flaps his hands, maybe to some tune in his head. His dad calls it his “happy dance.” For Justin Brandner, life is a happy dance.

Eighteen years ago, Justin Brandner wasn’t expected to live, let alone walk, let alone love pretty much every minute of his highly compromised life. With his upcoming graduation from Bremerton High School his father Jerry and the rest of his family have been celebrating the milestones of Justin's Senior year. (Meegan M. Reid / Kitsap Sun)
