One of the best things about joining the staff of a newspaper in a new area is that all of the annual festivals and events are completely new to me. While my co-photog Larry has shot the annual Tribal Canoe Journey many times in his 25 year stint here at the Kitsap Sun- for me it was a completely new and interesting experience.
That being said, when videographer Derek, writing intern extraordinaire Jeanette and I arrived to the event right on time (being assured that they always arrive late year after year) and noticed droves of people leaving, we were a little puzzled. Seems almost all of the 20 canoes had landed early leaving Derek and I to scramble to shoot the few stragglers paddling in to Point Julia.
So while I was bummed I didn’t get the yearly cliché shot of the long line of canoes coming ashore at once, I know that the event happens every year so I’m sure I’ll get that shot eventually.
